FAST CROSSING

AWATEA’S VOYAGE TO SYDNEY

RADIO INTERVIEW WITH CAPTAIN (United Press Association.) Auckland, September 20. Sitting in his cabin in the Awatea as she sped towards Sydney at more than 20 knots on her maiden voyage from Auckland, Captain A. H. Davey reported on the excellent progress the vessel was making in a conversation with The New Zealand Herald to-night. It was the first time a newspaper in New Zealand had interviewed a captain in a ship at sea by radio telephone. “Everything has gone very well. We are now 1038 miles from Auckland and 243 miles from Sydney,” Captain Davey said. The vessel met a heavy southwesterly swell on Saturday and a fresh northerly breeze to-day. Nevertheless she had averaged 21 knots for the trip up to 7 o’clock to-night with only four of the six boilers used. The day’s run from noon on Saturday till noon today was 514 miles. The Awatea will be at Sydney Heads at 6 o’cock to-morrow morning. The crossing will have taken 2 days 13 hours.
