A UNITED FRONT FOR DEFENCE
Labour To Support
Rearmament VOTE OF NATIONAL EXECUTIVE MR MORRISON CRITICAL (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) London, September 19. The political correspondent of The Daily Telegraph says that at a meeting of the National Executive of the Labour Party lasting five hours it was revealed that a substantial majority supported the Government’s rearmament programme. A sub-committee was appointed to draft a resolution to that effect for submission to the executive for endorsement at the annual conference in October.
Dr Hugh Dalton, a member of the House of Commons, said that British Labour should show a united front on the question of preparation towards arming to defend democratic institutions.
Mr J. R. Clynes and other influential members supported this view, but Mr Herbert Morrison was critical and Major C. R. Attlee, the Leader of the Opposition, was non-committal.
