BRITAIN NOT TO BE DIVERTED

Efforts For Peace In Palestine

(British Official Wireless.) Rugby, September 18.

The Secretary for the Colonies (Mr W. Ormsby-Gore), in a speech at Stafford, said that the Government did not subtract anything from or add anything to its recent statement of policy on Palestine. The Government made it perfectly clear that it could not be diverted from that policy by the shooting of British soldiers or by acts of terrorism and violence.

To secure peace was the Government’s sincere hope, said the Minister. That was what it was working for in Spain. Never had Britain been in greater need of young men to defend her and her liberties against the overspill of ideas from the Continent. His Royal Highness the Duke of York, as Colonel of the Scots Guards, visited Aidershot and made a farewell inspection of the 2nd Battalion, which leaves Aidershot for Palestine on Sunday. “You are going to Palestine under more or less active service conditions,” said the Duke. “The situation there is very delicate and your duty will be to maintain law and order, a task that carries with it very heavy responsibilities and calls for the utmost tact. As your Colonel I expect you by your behaviour, bearing and appearance, both on and off parade, and particularly in your association with the civilian population, to uphold the good name of his Majesty’s Foot Guards.”
