AWATEA’S TRIP TO AUCKLAND
FAST TASMAN TIME EXCEEDED. (Special to The Times.) Auckland, September 17. Held to satisfy several Union Company directors who were passengers from Wellington to Auckland that the claims made for her are justified, a five-hour speed trial up the coast of the new Tasman liner Awatea showed that the vessel will have no difficulty in making the Tasman crossing in even less time than the two and a-half days which have been allowed. Her speed during the trial, with a reserve of power, easily exceeded the fastest time made between New Zealand and Australia.
The automatic steering wheel was again used coming from Wellington. It was possible, said one of the passengers, to find only one officer on the bridge and he was occupied with charts.
