RISE IN COST OF MEALS
City Restaurants
The increased cost of living and of labour has had its effect on some city restaurants. Two-course meals which formerly cost 1/3 are now 1/6, the same price as a three-course meal. A flat rate has also been introduced for suppers. Ninepenny snacks before going home to bed are now a thing of the past. The minimum price for supper is now a shilling, whether the customer toys with tea and toast or seriously devotes himself to tea, sandwiches, scones and cakes. “Let’s go to supper” will no longer be a phrase that comes lightly to the lips of the youth of the community after an evening at the pictures. There is also a flat rate of one shilling for afternoon teas. The shorter working week and the attendant increase in staff, the higher wage rate and the increased cost of certain foodstuffs were among the reasons given by the manageress of one restaurant to The Southland Times yesterday for the increased charges.
