AUSTRALIA TO BUILD OWN WARSHIP

TERRITORIAL ARMY OF 35,000. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Canberra, September 12. In announcing the Government’s defence programme the Minister of Defence (Sir Archdale Parkhill) said it included a new warship, to be built in Australia. The armaments in the cruisers Australia and Canberra were to be modernized. The aircraft firstline strength would consist of 194 planes, of which 96 would be in service this year. A permanent army to the number of 2300 and a militia, almost certainly of 35,000, would be maintained. Anti-gas training and the provision of equipment was also proposed.
