MODERATE WINDS, BUT RAIN PROBABLE. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, September 11. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Moderate io strong northerly to north-westerly winds, rising in places to gale force. Weather fair to fine at first but shortly becoming unsettled and rain probable. Temperatures mild. Seas moderate but rising. Following is tire Dominion forecast:— Weather fair to fine at first in most places. Scattered showers probable, however, on the West Coast of the South Island and later conditions becoming unsettled generally in districts with a westerly aspect and the far south, with rain developing. Some heavy falls probable from Taranaki southwards. Temperatures mild. General Situation.—The recent depression has moved away eastwards and an anti-cyclone is passing to the north. A deep westerly depression, however, is now located over south-eastern Australia and the western Tasman Sea and is advancing towards New Zealand. Winds. —Moderate southerly to westerly, veering to north-westerlies and increasing; later reaching gale force in many places. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough on the west coast, elsewhere moderate, but later rising about Cook and Foveaux Straits; eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong westerly winds veering to north-westerly and increasing to gale force more especially in the southern half. Seas rough.

The weather in Invercargill yesterday was, for the greater part of the day, fine and warm. A light shower of rain fell late in the afternoon, but later the weather cleared again. At one o’clock this morning tire weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (steady) 29.46 in. Yesterday 29.50 in. Thursday 29.40 in.
