COMMENTS.
What happened to the eleven-year-olds this week? The honours were carried off by your younger’ cousins. I am very pleased with the entries sent by the smaller ones, and I hope they will continue to write. You must be careful with punctuation, and please write in ink if you can. Avoid using the expression “after having done . . ,” or “having done . . . .” They are useful expressions, but you are using them far too much. Some cousins are starting each sentence in this manner. 397th. COMPETITION. Poem for Cousin 12 and over: “Joyful Times.” Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Isobel McKenzie M.A.C., (14), Dipton, May McLean (13), Clifden-Tuatapere R.D. Very Highly Commended and 3 marks to Cousins Frances Gibbon A.C. (15), 44 Cranley street, Dunedin, Celia Smith (14), Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island, Mary Lobb A.C. (13), Box 28, Edendale. Highly Commended and 2 marks to Cousins Sydney Small (16), 22 Antrim street, Ngaire Head (12), Wireless station, Awarua, Mona Bell (12), Lumsden (2 entries), Iris Mincher (13), Dipton, Mabel Clarke (13), South Hillend R.D., Winton, Jocelyn Horner (12), “Mayfield,” Heddon Bush R.D., Winton. COMMENTS. Cousin Isobel, your great fault is still a tendency to leave your sentences unfinished. Supply each sentence with a central verb, and observe the same rules you would for prose. Cousin May is a new writer with a good sense of rhythm and rhyme. She has written a lilting song with an atmosphere of spring. Only two or three people realized that “Joyful Times” is our motto, and wrote about it. DRAWING COMPETITION. Entries for drawings for the Spring Page close on TUESDAY, September 15. Choose your own subject, and make a clear black and white drawing. 398th. CODIPETITION. Story for all Cousins: “The Flowers in my Garden.” Poem for all Cousins: “Spring.” Entries close TUESDAY, September 15.
