Wyndham TOWN BOARD

The Monthly Meeting

At the monthly meeting of the Wyndham Town Board, the following were present:—Commissioners H. Hunter (chairman), L. Harper, R. G. Carson, A. W. Crosbie, W. Richardson and F. Ball.

The engineer of the Southland County Council advised regarding the Eden-dale-Wyndham-Mokoreta flood protection question, that he was in receipt of the board’s letter accepting his appointment of the estimated costs, amounting to £35 out of £B7 10/-, and also that the Saleyards Company was prepared to find only £lO. He would place the matter before the next meeting, he stated, and anticipated that the board’s suggestion that the council and the Town Board each pay half of the remaining £7 10/- would be acceptable. The work would be laid off very shortly, but it might be a few weeks before any construction work were undertaken. Street Lights. Referring to the street lights, Cr Crosbie said that the lights still went out often. Although the board had appealed to the Power Board time and time again, no satisfaction had been gained. The chairman remarked that the lights went out during every storm. Cr Richardson said that one Saturday night the lights in Wyndham had gone out after 7 p.m., while Edendale and Mataura were beautifully lit. The inspector (Mr Leitch) said that Edendale and Mataura had a special contract with the Power Board. There was too much load on the lights in the town. Cr Harper said that the lights must have been badly installed. The only remedy, said the chairman, was the replacing of the present wire with heavier wire. The Power Board had never replied to correspondence concerning the matter. It looked as though the Power Board was dormant. The inspector reported that the street hanging lamps had behaved similarly lately and the light outside the hall had definitely too much load. Cr Carson said that the Government was certain to take over the scheme. The clerk was instructed to write, calling the Power Board’s attention to the condition of the town lighting. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Sister Jessie, of the Presbyterian Maori Missions, has been giving addresses in Wyndham. She addressed the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union and the Girls’ Auxiliary. Mrs G. D. Falconer presided. On the motion of Miss L. Simpson, Sister Jessie was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Sister Jessie took the morning service at Wyndham and the afternoon service at Mimihau. She gave a lantern lecture in the Sunday School Hall. LODGE FUNCTION A successful annual ball was held by the Alma Lodge, 1.0.0. F., No. 34, in the Town Hall. There was an excellent attendance and the hall was decorated with orange, light blue and dark blue streamers, while the rich tonings of the lodge regalia added to the brightness of the setting. District lodges were represented. The floor was controlled by Bros. R. McKay, J. Harper, E. Burgess, and N. Henderson, while music was provided by the Syncopators’ orchestra. A supper extra was contributed by Miss M. McLauchlan. The grand march was led by N.G. Bro. McLellan and Mrs R. McLellan. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs A. Hamilton (Morton Mains) and Mr A. Sleeman (Invercargill). The arrangements for the evening were very complete, and were the result of the efforts of an energetic committee headed by Bro. R. McLellan (chairman) and Bro. J.
