, TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS MILLER WINS MEN’S SINGLES Last evening the final games of the table tennis championships were played at Everybody’s. The four semi-finalists in the men’s A grade championship were Miller, Clafidge, G. Harrop (all of Dunedin) and Robson (Invercargill). Miller defeated Claridge, while Harrop defeated Robson after a close game. The final between Miller and Harrop was a match of long rallies in which steadiness and placements were the main features. Miller won after a long three-set match. Mrs Ferguson, last year’s champion, again won the women’s championship, defeating Miss Croad in the final. The men’s doubles produced some great play, Claridge and Claridge (Dunedin) just heading off Robson and Smith (Invercargill) after a long and interesting struggle. Mcßride and Miss McGrath showed greatly improved form, taking both the mixed doubles championship and the mixed doubles handicap. Mrs Colbert and Mrs Croad’s superior combination proved successful in the women’s doubles championships. They won in straight sets from Mesdames Ferguson and Robson. (United Press Association.) New Plymouth, September 10. Earl McCready at Stratford to-night defeated Paul Boesch with a submission fall gained with a boston crab at the beginning of the eighth round. The bout was clean, interesting and even. Boesch was even on points till he hurt his back in an unsuccessful dropkick in the seventh round. WOODS AND DUSEK DRAW. (United Press Association.) Wanganui, September 10. In one of the fastest and most exciting wrestling bouts this season, Joe Kopach Woods and Dannie Dusek wrestled to a draw to-night, each securing a fall. Both men showed a wide variety of holds and introduced sufficient showmanship to keep the crowd in high spirits. Woods secured the first fall in the third round, with a surfboard, to which Dusek submitted. Dusek equalized in the seventh round with £ fall from a body press. After a series of forearm jolts he weakened Woods with two severe Irish whips and picked him up and dumped him after an aeroplane spin.

The Wanganui Rugby team defeated Hawke’s Bay in a match played at Hastings this afternoon by 8 points to nil. No tries were scored in the first half, but within 10 minutes of the end of the game, the visitors scored two tries, which gave them victory. The tries were scored by Burgess and Reynolds, one being converted by Welch. GOLF THE CENTENARY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. SARAZEN’S SCORE OF 74. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) South Australia’s big golf event, the Centenary open championship, of 72 holes, in which 76 golfers are competing, including Gene Sarazen and Miss Hicks (U.S.A.), commenced to-day at the Seaton links in a stiff north-wes-terly wind. The Australian open champion, F. McMahon, led the field at the end of the first round of 18 holes with a score of 70. He was out in 37 and home in 33. Then came W. Rymill with 72, W. Harvey with 73 and Sarazen with 74. H. Mills (74), A. Toogood (74), R. Crook (74), Von Nida, Queensland (75), H. Hattersley (76), R. Stewart (77), and Miss Hicks (78), are others well in the picture. -. QUEEN'S PARK CLUB. ; DRAUGHTS TOWN PLAYERS VISIT DIPTON. ' On Wednesday evening a strong team from the Invercargill Club visited Dip- ■ ton to take part in a friendly match 1 with players of that and surrounding districts. After a well-contested series of games the town players won by a margin of eight games, which was not altogether indicative of the run of play. At supper after the match, the Rev. J. Johnstone, captain of the country side, congratulated the winners. Mr F. Hutchins replied for the Town club. Other speakers were Messrs W. Scott and G. Hamilton, who referred appreciatively to the excellent work done by Mr Hutchins, through the courtesy of The Southland Times, in conducting the weekly column, which proved to be a great aid and source of interest to all players, particularly those in country districts. Beattie 1 W. Mcßae 1 16 « 10 1 RIFLE SHOOTING CITY GUARDS CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the City Guards Rifle Club was held last evening. The president, Mr E. J. McLauchlan, presided over a good attendancc. The annual report stated that during the past season the shooting strength of the club had considerably improved, this being due to the new issue of 1929 ammunition and to the efforts of several of the members who regularly attended the range. The original high standard of teams’ shooting has been maintained, and the club had its first victory in the Breweries Cup competition at Garston, with the fine score of 467 points, while Garston A team was second with 446 points. In conjunction with the meeting the Garston championship cup, presented by Mr H. McKenzie, president of the Wakatipu Club, was competed for and won by Rifleman W. McChesney, club captain of the City Guards, with the score of 32, 33, 34—99 out of a possible 105. The club, however, distinguished itself by activities in other fields on the part of certain of its members, including in particular Rifleman R. Ure, who won the Southland championship after tying with the veteran W. McChesney and taking the honours in the shoot-off. Congratulations were extended to Rifleman A. Wilson on his winning the B Grade aggregate at the Southland meeting on Boxing Day and to Rifleman W. J. Murray for his fine performance in winning the tyro aggregate in Dunedin during the Easter prize firing. With the record score of 444 W. McChesney won the club championship, while Rifleman A. Wilson with 437 points was runner-up. Rifleman A. E. Henderson, a young first-year shot, was also to be congratulated on his winning the B Grade championship of the club and also the John Flaus gold medal for the most improved shot for the season. The miniature season of the club had been most successful, due 'to the wholehearted co-operation of the executive. Rifleman F. E. Wright was to be congratulated on winning the miniature championship, B. Broomfield being run-ner-up after shooting-off with Wright. Rifleman A. E. Henderson won the B grade miniature championship. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman reviewed the club’s activities during the year and trusted that the coming season would be a successful one. He said that owing to heavy calls on his time he would be unable to accept any responsible office. The report and balance-sheet (which disclosed a credit balance) were adopted. T, Wilson Cup should begin with the firing of shoots over 300, 500 and 600 yards on Saturday, September 26. R.S.A. CLUB, A shoot took place at the R.S.A. rifle range last evening. The club captain, W. O’Brien, won the nightly trophy with a possible 80. The general standard was good. Beginning on Monday, a special three-night handicap competition for A, B and C grades will be held in conjunction with the final of the championships. ‘ The following are last night’s scores :—

J. Perry (England) defeated H. Culley (California) 6—3, 6—2, 6—l. It was an uninteresting match, the American, despite a cannonball service and occasional evidences of “top flight” tennis, being unable to withstand the Englishman’s all-round accuracy and sound play. B. M. Grant defeated J. Van Ryn 6-3, B—6, 6—3.
