ELECTRICAL POWER SCHEME

TAPANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL FAVOURS RETENTION. After hearing a deputation of three speakers, Messrs T. L. Macdonald, E. Murney and J. D. Edgar, the Tapanrn Borough Council unanimously carried the following resolution at a meeting this week:— “That this council, after hearing the explanations of the deputation concerning the proposed acquisitions of the Southland Power Board s scheme by the Government, considers that, at present, it is in the best interests of the ratepayers generally that the scheme should be retained by the board.” MEETING AT NIGHTCAPS. A meeting of ratepayers was held in Nightcaps last evening. Mr W. Excell, chairman of the Nightcaps I own. Board, presided, and Messrs J. Gilkison and A. McKenzie presented the case for the Southland Power Board. There was an attendance of 27 ratepayers. The speakers addressed the meeting along the lines of previous meetings. They were accorded an attentive hearing and were called upon to answer a number of questions. Mr J. Lynch (Wreys Bush) moved, the following motion: “That while thanking the visitors for their addresses, it is the opinion of this meeting.that the acceptance of the State’s offer is in the best interests of Southland.” An amendment, moved by Mr J. Beck (Wairio) and seconded by Mr J. J. Crampton (Opio), “That the speakers be accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their addresses,” was carried on the voices. MEETING AT BLUFF NOT HELD. The meeting arranged to be held last night at Bluff, at which Mr W. McChesney and Mr W. Grieve were to speak in favour of the retention of the power scheme by the Southland Electric Power Board, was not held, because of the lack of attendance.
