ROUND TRIP BY AIR
American Service To Manila (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Washington, Sept. 9. The Department of Commerce has announced that a regular passenger and mail air service from Oakland (California) through Honolulu to Manila ( capital of the Philippines), a distance of 7990 miles, will be started in from 30 to 60 days. A Federal engineer and flight officers recently made a round trip of inspection and approved the route. The flying time will be 57 hours, an elapsed time of 60 hours being permitted on the weekly round trip. Because of the large load of petrol necessary the maximum will be seven passengers and 8001 b of mail. Pan-Am-erican Airways is operating the sei vice, and will receive two dollars a mile for the mail contract. It is stated that the trans-Atlantic air service is temporarily held up by the insistence of the United States that Pan-American Airways be allowed. to make trip for trip with Imperial Airways. Pending an agreement with the British authorities it is understood that Imperial Airways is considering the possibility of operating its own transAtlantic service through. Montreal and Bermuda. _____________
