MAIN HIGHWAY DEVIATION
Avoiding Flood Trouble NEW ROAD SECTION AT McNAB A substantial improvement to the main highway from Dunedin to Invercargill is to be made by the Main Highways Board by the construction of a five-mile deviation between McNab and Pukerau. This will eliminate from the route a section of road that because of frequent flooding has caused much trouble and delay to motorists. Advice that the deviation would be begun was received yesterday by Mr J. S. Dick, secretary to the Automobile Association, Southland. The association had telegraphed to the Main Highways Board on Tuesday drawing attention to the inconvenience caused motorists from time to time by flooding at McNab and stating that on the previous night there had been 20 inches of water on the road. The reply from the board was received by Mr Dick yesterday. It read: — The board has already arranged to deviate the highway to avoid flooding on the Pukerau-McNab section. Survey requirements and finalizing of details will not allow construction work io commence till about the end of October. Mr Dick said yesterday that the board's announcement was good news for motorists. The present section of the road where the trouble was caused, near McNab, ran on. the north side of the railway line, and he understood that the deviation would take this section of the road on the southern side, probably for a distance of about five miles.
