Fifty Years Ago To-day

(From The Southland Times.) SEPTEMBER. 11, 1886. Municipal Elections.—The suburban elections which took place yesterday resulted: Avenal—Messrs Thomas Smith, W. J. Harvey and H. McNeilage. There were six candidates. East Invercargill—Mr H. Gilbertson was the successful candidate for the North Ward, the figures being: Gilbertson 34, J. Cahill 22. South Invercargill—Mr John Patterson headed the poll for the Middle Ward by eight votes, the figures being: Patterson 19, Butler 11. First Fire, Now Water.— Lake Rotorua has risen alarmingly, owing to the heavy rainfall and the fact that the outlet is dammed up by the late volcanic disturbance. The houses along the foreshore are now rendered uninhabitable. The Maori burying ground on Muiruika Point has been submerged and several coffins with the bodies floated off in the lake. The natives are removing the other bodies to a fresh burying place. Dropping Away.—Mr Isaac Newton Watt died yesterday in Dunedin. The deceased gentleman was at one time resident magistrate at Bluff, and was therefore a man of mark in the early days of the settlement of Southland. New South Wales v. Otago.— The ground was in capital condition for the football match New South Wales v. Otago yesterday. The final score was 23-nil in Otago’s favour.
