The Hon. Adam Hamilton arrived in Invercargill by the express last evening. Mr E. Bruce Levy, agrostologist to the Department of Agriculture, who has been on a brief visit to Southland, returned north yesterday. Dr W. B. Oliver, Director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, is visiting Wanganui to carry out research work at the Alexander Museum. Three nominations, those of Messrs P. C. Hazledine, M. J. Royds and C. Wilson were received by the secretary of the Southland Acclimatization Society last night for the vacancy on the council. On a secret ballot being taken Mr Royds was elected. Mr J. Carter, who is retiring from the staff of the Government Printing Office, Wellinpton, on superannuation after 35 years’ service, was presented with a fountain pen from the members of the Overseers’ Association and a travelling bag from officers of the composing staff. In making the latter presentation, the Government Printer (Mr G. H. Loney) thanked Mr Carter for the valuable and conscientious service he had always given to the department, and wished him and Mrs Carter long life to enjoy the leisure so well earned.
