SOUTH INVERCARGILL BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the South Invercargill W.C.T.U. took the form of a social evening. There was a good attendance of members and friends. A number were present from tlie North and Central unions and were welcomed by the president. The main item of the evening was an address by Mr B. P. Mansfield, Superintendent of Reserves. Mr Mansfield took for his subject “The Improving of our Home Gardens,” and spoke of the influence of gardens on the upbuilding of life and character. He gave instructions on how to prepare a seedbed and how to tend and care for the young plants by attention to warmth, light, and moisture. The propagation of plants and shrubs by cuttings was explained, also conditions of soil affecting certain plants and shrubs. At the conclusion of the address a number of questions were asked and answered. The concert programme was as follows: Pianoforte duet, Mesdames Hamilton and Lea; song, Miss Walker; violin solo, Miss Winifred Lea; songs, Miss Simon; song with violin obbligato, Miss Walker.
