Southland Battalion Council.

Tlie usual meeting of the Southland Battalion Council will be held in the First Church rooms on Thursday evening next. Owing to unavoidable circumstances, the special meeting to be held last evening, had to be postponed and will now be combined with the general meeting next week. Fireman’s Badge.

secretary has received word from the superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade (Mr F. Simpson) that the three members of the 7th Invercargill Company, S. Targuse, S. Miller, and E. .Walker, who presented themselves for examination for the fireman’s badge, passed. Mr Simpson adds: “Please convey my personal congratulations to these lads.” It is expected that a further batch of hoys will sit the test set by the Central Fire Station next Wednesday evening. Life Boys.

Tlie annual Life Boy combined church parade will be held in Central Methodist Church on Sunday, September 20, at 2.45 p.m. Tlie parade will meet at Queen’s Park at 2 p.m., fall in at 2.15 p.m. for inspection, and march off, headed by the Civic Band, at 2.30 p.m. The service will be conducted by tlie Rev. E. B. Chambers, assisted by other chaplains. The annual demonstration will be held on Wednesday, September 30, in Stobo Hall. A rehearsal will take place in Stobo Hall on Friday, September 25, at 6.30 p.m. A Visit to 3rd Dunedin.

Recently Mr W. Cathcart, captain of 3rd Invercargill Company, while on holiday in Dunedin, paid a visit to the 3rd Company. This old company, with which Southland had many happy associations in the early days of the movement in New Zealand, is now under Captain Luckie and is doing very well. Mr Cathcart inspected the boys and witnessed the semaphore and Morse signalling which was of a high standard. The company numbers 25 with an average attendance of 22. We are pleased to know our old rivals are doing so well.

Gymnastic Display. During the holidays two car-loads of boys from the 2nd Invercargill Company, under Messrs J. H. Boyd and D. B. Cameron, paid a visit to 'Winton where a happy night was spent with the Ist Southland. Mr A. G. Gardiner welcomed the visitors and a good attendance of parents and friends witnessed a display on the horizontal bar, _ and vaulting horse, together with mat jerks. Messrs Boyd and Cameron expressed their appreciation of the hospitality of the country company, Captain Goodall and Mr Gardiner replying.

Association Football. Advice has been received from Otago that it is unable to send a 8.8. team to Invercargill this year. However, the first annual match between the Old Boys of the two battalions has been arranged and the Southland “Bob’s” will travel to Dunedin on Saturday, September 26. 8.8. Week. Tie September Council Table contains the results of 8.8. Week, which again proved more successful than ever before. Sixty-seven companies took part and with 65 returns to hand, the total is £324 2/9, compared with £290 12/8 last year. Southland has every reason to be proud of its effort, as it occupies the most prominent positions. Of the £325 collected for the whole of the Dominion, Southland raised £9O 3/9, well over a quarter of the total. Second Invercargill, with £27 13/6, was in first position, £lO clear of 7th Dunedin; while Ist Southland (£l4) was third; 6th Southland (£l2 3/9) fifth, and 3rd Southland, 2nd Southland. sth Southland, and 3rd Invercargill all receive honourable mention. Although the company with the highest average per boy is not yet decided, it appears that the 2nd Invercargill or the 2nd Southland will carry off this honour. The latter did excellently, eight boys collecting £6 4/-, an average of 15/6 a boy. It is their first 8.8. Week effort. Gore (6th Southland) easily heads the list for the new companies. Private P. Boyd, who was leading boy last year, must again harry off the honour with the wonderful total of £l2—he filled no fewer than 11 cards!
