MARKETING IN AUSTRALIA
SUPPORT FOR HOLDING OF REFERENDUM STRONG OPPOSITION FROM ADELAIDE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.35 p.m.) Canberra, Sept. 9. A joint meeting of the two parties of Government supporters to-day approved the referendum on marketing. It is understood that the Government is also considering whether at the same time the Commonwealth should seek to obtain absolute control over aviation and broadcasting.
A message from Adelaide states that the Premier of South Australia (Mr R. L. Butler) expressed the opinion that the chances of the success of the referendum to give the Commonwealth power over marketing were 1000 to one against; he could not conceive that the Commonwealth, in the face of the opposition already expressed by some States, would waste £lOO,OOO on a referendum.
