EXPULSION OF SPAIN
Desire Of Moors GENERAL FRANCO’S DIFFICULTY FRESH COMPLICATION INTRODUCED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 12.10 a.m.) Tangier, August 14. The civil war in Spain has introduced fresh complications in Morocco. The tribesmen are forming a national front to expel Spain from the “Soul of Islam.” General Franco’s expectations that the Moors would flock to his banner have been disappointed. The dicipline of such natives as have joined him has been affected by the irregularity of the payment of wages. A message from Paris states that both sides are making renewed efforts to obtain foreign support. The president (Senor Manuel Azana) told a French journalist that France’s frontier is now the Sierra de Guadarrama. If Fascism wins it will hold the Pyrenees. France must also ask herself who will hold Morocco and the Balearic Islands. Two hundred Liberals from most of the European countries including Viscount Churchill and Sir Norman Ancell, met in Paris and carried a resolution stating that neutrality would be suicidal and tantamount to strengthening Fascism.
Long Dictatorship.
General Dellano made a statement at Seville stating that the country would decide whether the Monarchy would be restored, but Parliament would be abolished and a military dictatorship would last a long time. The French authorities impounded a British de Havilland plane destined for the rebels.
The special Barcelona correspondent of the Sun-Herald News Agency, after travelling over the entire north-eastern front, concludes that Catalonia is out of all danger. Whatever happens elsewhere, the rebels have lost the war in the east of the Peninsula. Elsewhere the rebels are on the defensive. Their superiority is purely technical. They have more modern war materials and officers with more military experience than the Government forces, but the rank and file often is not enthusiastic. General Franco is uncertain how far he can rely on their loyalty, hence his reluctance to advance for fear of desertions.
