BROADCASTING CONTROL

APPLICATIONS FOR DIRECTORSHIP OVER 150 RECEIVED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, July 30. The fact that the Government has received over 150 applications for the position of Director of Broadcasting in New Zealand was announced in an interview to-night by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), who is alsc Minister of Broadcasting. Mr Savage said that applications had now closed, and the next task confronting the Government would probably be to appoint a sub-committee of Cabinet to examine the applications and reduce their number for final selection. There were numerous candidates for the position from Australia and some from even further afield, and from a cursory examination of the applications he, personally, was satisfied that the services of several outstanding men were available. “We also propose to have a general inspection and valuation of the various B stations,” Mr Savage continued. “The Departmental officers will be specially assigned to this task within the next few days, and they will value all the stations from the point of view of the broadcasting service provided, as well as of the plant in use. These details will be necessary when the Government is determining the rate of subsidy to be paid to the individual B stations or the purchase price of those to be bought out for use as commercial stations.”
