Lumsden THE TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Lumsden Town Board the chairman (Mr A. Heath) presided. The Lumsden Basketball Club applied for permission to put down concete or bitumen courts on the recreation grounds. It was decided to grant the application, subject to the courts being constructed between the two pavilions. The clerk (Mr W. Thompson) was granted one month’s leave of absence. The chairman referred to the approaching marriage of the clerk, and took the opportunity to wish him future happiness. Mr Thompson replied. MOTHERS’ UNION Fifteen members attended the monthly meeting of the Mothers’ Union. Two new members were admitted. The Vicar (the Rev. H. Fallows) read a paper by Mrs L. Woods, on the life of Mary Sumner and the growth of the Mothers’ Union. Afternoon tea was later served in the Vicarage, Mrs H. Graham and Mrs W. F. Johnson being the hostesses. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT The fortnightly euchre in aid of the Plunket Society’s funds was held in the Plunket Rooms. The first prizes were won by Mrs A. Reidy and Mr D. Andrews. Miss C. Reidy won the women’s special prize. The women’s consolation prize went to Miss M. Jack and the men’s consolation prize to Mr W. Thompson. Mrs H. Dore donated the prizes. GOLF Mr A. Heath presided at a meeting of the Lumsden Golf Club. It was decided to carry out further improvements to the links and arrangements were made to hold a Northern District golf championship tournament towards the end of August. The winners of a flag match were Mrs A. McDonald and Mr R. Robertson. RUGBY FOOTBALL The Lumsden School Rugby football team travelled to Waikaia and was defeated by 5 points to nil. As both teams are now even in the competition for the Christie Cup, a play-off will be necessary. This match will be played at Balfour on Friday. The result of the senior grade Black and White Cup match was a win for Country Pirates which defeated Lumsden by 11 points to 3. The final will be played at Balfour between Country Pirates and Balfour.
