Wairio BIRCHWOOD HUNT

FLAG STEEPLECHASE There was a good attendance when the Wairio branch of the Birchwood Hunt Club ran a flag steeplechase meeting. Tlie following took part in a hunt: A. J. Langford, acting master, on Wrey Boa; J. Langford, huntsman, on Shillelagh Wood; M. O’Brien, whip, on Matchem; Miss M. McNamee, on Queen of Song; T. A. Langford, on Waipounamu; A. Keen, on Trixie; F. Duffy, on Tom Thumb. The following were the officials for the flag steeplechases: President, Mr J. Egan; judge, Mr B. Rushton, sen.; starter, Mr J. Welsh; clerk of course, Mr J. O’Brien; clerk of scales, Mr M. Forde; secretary, Mr G. W. Gardiner. Results:— MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE. Weight: list 71b. Distance: One and three-quar-ter miles. First prize, trophy valued at £3; second prize, trophy valued at £l. Mr J. L. Hazlett’s Nagambit. (B. Langford) 1 Mr P. Boyle’s Faculties (J. Boyle) 2 Mr A. Reid’s Everready (Owner) 3 Also started: Mr G. Adams’s Viper (owner); Mi - J. Halford’s Talook (owner); Mr G. Nisbet’s Wrey Boa (A. J. Langford); Mr J. S. Hazlett’s Hokonui (owner). Hokonui led to the stands, where he jumped into the enclosures. In a good race, with good jumping, Nagambie beat Faculties by half a length. Everready was 10 lengths back. J. S. Hazlett received a nasty fall when Hokonui jumped the enclosure fence, but he recovered later in the day. OPEN STEEPLECHASE. Weight: 12st. Distance: About two miles. First prize, trophy valued at £6; second prize, trophy valued at £2. Mr M. O’Brien’s Matchem (J. Langford) 1 Mr W. Young’s Cultivator (Owner) j Mr W. Swale’s Slim Jim (J. Boyle) f Also started: Mr L. Dawson’s High Gear (A. Reid) fell. MEMBERS’ STEEPLECHASE. Weight list 71b. Distance: About one and threequarter miles. First prize, trophy valued at £3; second prize, trophy valued at £l. Mr J. S. Hazlett’s Hokonui (B. Langford) 1 Mr W. Swale’s Slim Jim (J. Boyle) 2 Mr A. Reid’s Everready (Owner) 3 Also started: Mr G. Adams’s Trixie (owner). Slim Jim led for 12 furlongs, but Hokonui wore him down to win by half a length. Everready was 10 lengths back. JUMPING COMPETITION. (Judges: Messrs J. Hogan and J. Welsh). Queen of Song (Miss McNamee) 1 Everready (A. Reid) 2 Also competed: Viper (G. Adams), Trixie (A. Keen), Wrey Boa (A. J. Langford).
