NEW NATIONAL DEFENCE COMPANIES
PROTECTION OF IMPORTANT POINTS. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, July 21. The Secretary for War (Major A. Duff Cooper) announced in the House of Commons that the Royal Defence Corps was to be replaced by National Defence Companies in the Territorial Army. The role of the companies would be to protect important points in Britain on the threat of war. They consist only of officers. The other ranks will consist of ex-members of his Majesty’s Forces between the ages of 45 years and 60 years. They will not be called up for service until the guarding of important points becomes necessary. Neither will they be called upon to account for civil disturbances.
