RADIO BEACONS

Early Installation At Auckland (United Press Association.) Auckland, July 21. The early installation of radio beacons on Cuvier Island andMoko Hinau Island, to assist shipping approaching the port of Auckland, was announced by the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr C. G. Maclndoe) when reporting to the board on the results of his recent interview with the Minister of Marine (the Hon. P. Fraser). Mr Maclndoe said that the Minister was fully seized of the need for radio beacons, for which the board had been applying during the last two or three years. He was very sympathetic towards the board’s request, and had given an assurance that immediately the two installations at Wellington were completed the Marine Department would proceed with the installation of beacons on Cuvier Island and Moko Hinau Island. - ' “When the installation is completed I am sure the masters of vessels will be very pleased,” said Mr Maclndoe. “It is something that should have been done years ago, and will make for the safety and efficiency of the port. I do not think that there is any port in New Zealand more in need of such beacons than Auckland.”

Mr Maclndoe added that by linking up with the Tiri beacon, ships would be able to feel their way into port in all weathers, instead of waiting outside, as in the past.
