PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS
MR SEMPLE’S AIM CAMPAIGN FOR SAFETY FIRST (United Press Association.) Wellington, July 21. “The wholesale slaughter on the roads has got to stop,” said the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) today. Since the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill was introduced early in June, there had been 47 deaths on the roads caused by motor accidents, and the number of hit and run accidents had doubled, said Mr Semple. It had to be stopped. He was satisfied that 90 per cent. of these fatalities could be prevented. As soon as the Bill was passed he intended to call all the interested parties to discuss the initiation of a Dominion-wide safety first campaign.
The Bill had received an excellent reception from local bodies and only minor amendments had been suggested, said Mr Semple.
