FIREMEN CAUGHT IN BUILDING
Five Badly Burned (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, July 21. A fire occurred last night in what is regarded as a dangerous zone in the city, at Surrey Hills, when the top floor of a five-storey building occupied by the Commonwealth Drug Company was found to be well alight, large quantities of inflammable materials and liquids making a spectacular sight which was witnessed for miles. Five firemen were severely burned on their faces, arms and bodies when two drums of oil exploded and sprayed them, necessitating their removal to hospital. The fire gutted the top floor and severely damaged the lower floors and their contents. Six firemen, including the deputychief officer, W. Beare, were trapped in the flames on the top floor. The firemen had to fight for their lives against the flames and deadly carbon monoxide fumes until comrades came to their aid. The damage to the building and the stock amounts to thousands of pounds.
