WOMEN’S DIVISION At the monthly meeting of the Crookston branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, final arrangements were made for the function of the A. C. E. dressmaking classes. Mrs Fleming gave a report of the Dunedin Conference to which she was a delegate. In the competition “Best article value, sixpence” Miss Revie was first with a pretty handkerchief sachet. The articles were then sold for sixpence each, the result being a good sum for the funds. The W. D. members then entertained the Young Farmers’ Club to supper.

At a meeting of the West Otago Football Sub-Union, a letter was received from the secretary of the .South Tuapeka Sub-Union suggesting Saturday, August 15, for the annual match between West Otago and South Tuapeka. The date was agreed to. Saturday, August 8, was suggested to the South Otago Sub-Union as a suitable date for the South v. West Otago match. No football fixtures will be played in the district on August 1, the date of the Ranfurly Shield match at Dunedin. It was decided to close the senior competition at the end of the second round. A junior competition will be held, the first match to be played on Saturday at 'Koi. There will be four teams in the competition, Tapanui, Heriot, ’Koi, |lf A - Miss A. Edgar, who has been on the staff of the Lawrence District High School, has been appointed to a position on the Tapanui District High School staff. Mr Annan, a missionary from Africa under the Sudan Interior Mission, gave a lantern lecture in the ’Koi church on Thursday last. Mr W. Elder, East Chatton, will accompany Mr and Mrs Annan on their return to Africa in three months. . ~ , , The Crookston Post Office which has been open for 60 years is now closed, as a rural mail delivery is now running in the district. The Merino Downs Debating Club held an open night in Mr H. Brock’s barn. After the usual business had been dealt with a Mock Parliament was held. The bill before the House

was “The Bachelors’ Taxation Bill,” and the members’ speeches for and against caused much amusement. Games and dances occupied the rest of the evening, and supper was provided by the ladies. The annual show of the Tapanui Poultry and Produce Show took place in the Town Hall. Entries were about the same as last year, all classes being well supported. In the poultry section, the championship (utility white leghorn hen) attracted 18 entries. Mr G. Kerr, Riversdale, judged the poultry. C. Bartley (Dunedin) won the championship, Mr W. Carson (Dunedin) second. Mr G. Bishop (Gore), who judged grain and seeds said the section was one of the best yet staged at Tapanui. The judge of the turnip section, Mr W. J. McKenzie Waikoikoi commented on the quality of the swedes and turnips shown, and on their weight, and absence from disease. Mr S. Hughes, Tapanui, the judge of vegetables and fruit, said that the fruit, though entries were smaller than usual, was up to standard. Vegetables were good, especially potatoes, ana marrows of which there were some very heavy specimens. An afternoon tea booth was conducted by the Girl Guides. A guessing competition, weight of fat sheep, was won by 6 persons, who all guessed the correct weight, 631 b. The second match ol the cup series was fired by the Tapanui Rifle Club on the Tapanui range, with a record attendance of 22 members. J. A. McDonald made the best score (94), range prizes going to 500yds, W. Kirk 34; 600yds, P. Edgar 33; 300yds, W. McKee 33.
