WAIKAIA DOG TRIALS

Excellent Entries THE HEADING EVENTS COMPLETED t Excellent entries were received for the Waikaia Sheep Dog Trials Association’s 22nd annual trials, which commenced on Thursday and continued yesterday, and when a halt was made at the end of yesterday’s work, only the two heading events had been completed. The maiden huntaway was nearing completion last evening, and the open huntaway and the local event will be run to-day. Few Southland clubs have been able to run their trials for three days, but the Waikaia Club has long been a popular organization amongst competitors and supporters of dog trials. The club has the use of an admirable site in the Waikaia Commonage, the open flat for heading events and fine hillside course for huntaways being particularly suitable for the purpose. Competitors from all parts of Southland and South and Central Otago are represented at this year’s trials, and at the completion of the ’events to-day it will probably be found that a record meeting has been held. The standard of the work has evoked, very favourable comment from the spectators and officials, and the points scored by the leading dogs were high. The weather has so far been clear and fine, with sharp frosty conditions in the mornings and evenings. The prospects for yesterday were for a continuation of such weather. The trials were under the direction of an energetic committee, with Mr Thomas Jeffrey as president. The conduct of the trials gave little cause for complaint, but the competitors would have preferred to secure details of their points earlier than was possible under the system used. Mr Andrew Gibson, of Miller’s Flat, acted as judge. He commented favourably on the high standard of the work in the heading events and said that the exhibitions of huntaways had been very promising. Completed results are as follows:— MAIDEN HEAD. Heading, bringing back and holding in ring; 400 yards. Time, 10 minutes. First prize £4, second £2, third £l.
