Orepuki THE ATHLETIC SOCIETY

MEMBER FAREWELLED At a meeting of the Athletic Society, Mr J. Brown presided over a good attendance. Mr J. Mason was appointed secretary, in place of Mr R. F. Pickering. Members of the Football and Athletic Clubs gathered to bid farewell to a member, Mr Pickering, who is leaving the district. The chairman (Mr E. D. Bone) on behalf of the combined clubs, presented Mr Pickering with a wallet. During the evening Mr C. Whelan sang a song. Community singing was led by Mr Roy Pickering. The following toast-list was honoured:—“Athletic Society” (proposed by G'. Purdue and responded to by Mr J. F. Brown); “Football Club” (Mr Munroe—Mr J. Mason); “Kindred Clubs” (Mr Roy Pickering—Mr T. Suddaby). SCHOOL COMMITTEE At a meeting of householders of the Orepuki School, 16 householders were present and Mr H. J. Sorensen presided. The roll number for the school is 117, and the average attendance for the year was 113. The annual statement showed a credit balance of £43 13/-. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year:—Messrs _ H. J. Sorenson (chairman), E. J. Weir (secretary), R. Lee, F. Popham, G. R. Hoursten, E. Hogg and J. Brown. FOOTBALL The Otautau Rugby football team travelled to Orepuki and defeated the home team by 12 points to 8. For Otautau, Bailey, in the forwards and Buxton, in the backs, were outstanding. For the home team McKenzie, in the forwards, was the only player to show form. The Orepuki junior team travelled to Nightcaps and was defeated by 20 points to nil. PAHIA GOLF CLUB The opening of the Pahia Golf Club took place in fine weather, there being a large attendance, including a number of Tuatapere players. A foursomes handicap was played, the best cards returned being:—J. Smith and L. Garden, 34; Miss Charlton and Morrison, 36; Miss Hannan and Portius, 36. CARD EVENING The prize-winners at the weekly card evenings were Miss A. Templeton and Mr A. McKay. A dance was held, music being supplied by Mrs J. Beaton and Messrs McKay and Belsham.
