Bluff THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough .Council there were present: The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. J. H. Doyle), and Crs. W. Butler, O. F. Metzger, A. C. McKillop, H. W. Newman, A. S. Wilson and W. L. Johnston. A communication was received from the Otago and Southland Fire and Underwriters’ Association about insurance classification in the borough. It was decided to pursue the subject further, with a view to having a reclassification of the insurance tariffs in the borough, the matter to be leftf in the hands of the Deputy-Mayor and the Town Clerk. It was decided to include in the construction estimates further surface sealing, the sections selected being from Suir street to approximately 30 chains west, and from Burrows street to approximately 12 chains east. The council decided to purchase £2 worth of Anzac commemoration stamps. The Centenary. The Town Clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson), reporting on the centenary of Bluff, stated that a public meeting had been held on June 2 in the Council Chambers, when it was decided to proceed with the celebrations. A committee was formed and it was left to the Borough Council to fix the date of its first meeting. It was agreed to decide on a date at an early special meeting of the council, and to advise members of the committee immediately. A report submitted by the Borough overseer and foreman of works (Mr H. W. Lee), together with a plan of the proposed reorganization of the public works buildings, was discussed, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee for further consideration and report. The resignation was received of Mrs E. C. Johnson, who after seven years’ service with the council, has decided to enter business on her own account. The resignation was accepted with regret and it was decided that, as a mark of the council’s appreciation of her work Mrs Johnson would be granted a month’s holiday on full pay. The Town Clerk’s report stated that receipts for the month amounted to £l2OO 1/11 and expenditure to £985 12/11. The supply of water mains and specials under contract had been received, and the work of extending the 5-inch water main in portions of the western and eastern ends of the borough would be proceeded with immediately. Good progress was being made with the overhaul of the borough’s electrical reticulation, and the major portion of materials for renewal purposes was in hand.
