TENANTS WHO DEFACE THEIR HOUSES.

To the Editor. Sir,—I have this morning inspected a house just now vacated by a man and his. wife and family. These premises are in the most disgraceful state of dirt and destruction, windows broken, pedestal broken, papers torn from the walls, and even doors deliberately tom from their hinges and left upon the floor. Now, sir, this miscreant owes, I understand, twelve months’ rent, although a collector has called upon him about twice a week. Three years ago this dwelling was in a good state of repair. It has now deteriorated by at least £lOO, and yet the Government wish to keep such people in the houses. This is not an isolated case by any means. I know of several myself, both the men and the women are lazy and dirty; the men, drinking constantly. This dwelling does not belong to me but I have written to the Prime Minister pointing out how some tenants deliberately destroy dwellings while paying little or no rent. I have also given the names and addresses of four or five of these fiends, for it is more than time something was done to protect the landlord and the mortgagee. I advise the owner of this property to open the doors to the public for inspection, to call upon the police, our Mayor, our M.P., Mr Denham, and the City Inspector so that they may see and understand just what property owners suffer from this rabble.—Yours, etc. ALSO A SUFFERER. Invercargill, June 12, 1936.
