STEEPLECHASE WON BY DOZIE (United Press Association.) Hastings, June 11. The Hawkes Bay Jockey Club’s Winter meeting started to-day in cold weather. There was a fair attendance and good racing, the finishes being close throughout the day. The course was in good order. The single pool totalisator put through £4317 10/-, compared with £4187 for the first day last year, an increase of £l3O 10/-. Results:— MAIDEN PLATE, £7O. Special weights. Five and a-half furlongs. 8 Trailer 8.7 (Marsh) 1 5 Le Torquet 8.5 (Anderson) 2 2 Silver Tide 8.7 (Walsh) 3 Also started.—7 First Hand 8.7, 4 Agog 8.7, 11 Pakiaoturi 8.7, 12 Mon Ace 8.7, 13 Sunny Blonde 8.7, 9 Tractile 8.7, G Hunting Tartan 8.7, 14 Master Hector 8.7, 1 Lucullus Lad 8.7, 10 Gironde 8.7, 3 Essex 8.5, 15 Count Siegfried 8.2. First Hand was first out. Lucullus Lad was slow off the mark and Silver Tide soon took up the running, with Trailer, Le Torquet, Essex and Tractile following. Won by two lengths, third a length away. Blue Boy and Journet were together in the lead all the way. Manawatu was a long way back last. Coming to the last hurdle Blue Boy and Journet jumped together. Then Blue Boy drew out and won by four lengths. Count Willonyx finished well a neck away third. Manawatu was fourth. Time, 3min 17 3-ssec.

Cotsfield then went to the front and got a long lead from Strome and Dozie, but at the back Cotsfield hit the fence hard and lost his rider. This left Monarchy, Dozie and Strome all together. Kaokaoroa was well back. In the last round Strome momentarily took the lead, but ran across at the next jump, losing his position. Monarchy and Dozie were racing together to the last fence, when Dozie drew out and won by half a length. The third horse was half a length away. Time, smin llsec.
