DIPTON FIXTURE CONCLUDING EVENTS

Despite unfavourable weather a large number of enthusiasts was present at the concluding day of the Dipton dog trials yesterday. This fixture—the 18th annual meeting—was held on Messrs A. Gerrard and Sons’ property at Dipton and the owners-lent the sheep. Increased entries and keen competition each played a share in the success of the meeting, while the committee, headed by Mr C. Gray (president) and Mr A. D. Finlayson (secretary) had the arrangements so efficiently organized that the events were despatched without a hitch. A luncheon and afternoon stall, in charge of the members of the Dipton Girls’ Hockey Club, was well patronized. The judges at the meeting were Messrs J. Scott, of Invercargill (pulling events), and J. Smith, of Gore At the conclusion of the programme yesterday, Mr Gray presented the prizes to the winners and congratulated them on their success. He thanked the competitors for again supporting the meeting and referred to the fine work shown by the dogs, especially in the huntaway events. The results in yesterday’s events were as follows:—

SHORT PULL AND YARD. Heading, bringing back, hold in ring, drive to yard and yard. Time, 12 minutes; 400 yards. First prize, £4; second, £2; third, £l. Hemp cast out and heatled the sheep in one minute. The dog made a good run out, pulled in a nice line and his work at the ring was good, as was his yarding work. He yarded in 6min 35 sec.

May cast out to the right and came in on her cast. She refused to take command and cast out wide on the left. She cross-headed in 2min 30sec, but let the sheep wander off the course. Her ring work was fair. Pat cast out to the right and was a little slack in going out. He set the sheep before heading them and split them when he lifted them. He pulled in a fair line and got to the ring in five minutes. His work at the ring was fair. He yarded in nine minutes. MAIDEN HUNTAWAY. Dog to hunt and slew as judge directs. Time, BminFirst prize, £3; second, £1 10/-; third, 15/-. Points: Hunt 25, noise 15, slew 10, command 10, total 60.

Glen put the sheep through first and second sets of poles in a good line; also through the third set and completed in four minutes three seconds.

He was inclined to bark back at his owner.

Brandy got through the first set of poles in a fair line on his first attempt. He was inclined to leave the sheep at the second set, but got through them in a good line. The dog was inclined to lie down too much in the course of hunting. He also got through the third set of poles. NOVICE EVENT. Heading, bring bank and holding in ring,. Time, 8 minutes.
