FINDING OF GOLD BY GABRIEL READ

SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED. (United Press Association.) Dunedin, May 21. The 75th anniversary of Gabriel Read’s finding of gold was celebrated at Lawrence yesterday, the principal function being a public meeting, which was attended by several hundred people, including Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P. A wreath was placed on the cairn erected to Gabriel Read and the following pioneer celebrities planted trees: Mr Francis Moyle, aged 97, Mr William Ayson, Mr John Munro, Mr F. W. Knight, Mr Daniel Keenan, Mr Andrew Bums, aged 90, of Wellington, Mr Richard Norman, Mrs Gain, the first girl bom in Gabriel’s Gully, and Mr Joseph Bentley, the first boy bom in the Gully.
