STOCK VALUES

LORNEVILLE SALE POOR QUALITY FAT CATTLE ENTRY There was little alteration from last week’s values at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday, although the market was not a consistent one. The fat cattle and fat sheep yardings were slightly bigger than those of last week, but good .quality was not conspicuous in the former entry. There were very few attractive bullocks, aged and inferior cows making up a big proportion of the yarding. Values were on a par with o those of the previous fixture. Good quality ewes did not alter, either, but fat wethers were a shade easier. The yardings yesterday and those of last week were as follows;—

The entry included 450 fat lambs, five vealers, two bulls and five dairy cows. Store Cattle. The entry in this section was a very small one indeed. In fact, it was the smallest and the least attractive for a considerable time. A line of 10 mixed yearling steers made £1 11/- a head, and a pen of three-year-old steers in good condition brought £4 10/-. Empty cows were not wanted, but one or two good dairy cows, sold well, making £5 7/6 and £4 5/-. The National Mortgage and Agency Co. of N.Z. Ltd. sold:—On account of A. L. Chisholm, 1 steer at £1 7/6; A. Stevens (Glencoe R.D.), 2 empty cows at 16/-; J. Stuck (West Plains), 1 dairy cow at £4 5/-; W. Calvert (Glencoe R.D.), 1 dairy cow at £5 7/6. Ward (Fairfax), 1 bull at £2 17/6. Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold:— On account of the Jones estate (West Plains), 1 empty cow at 10/-. « Fat Cattle. The yarding was a little bigger than that at last week’s sale, but about twothirds of it comprised aged and inferior cows, there being a very small percentage of good quality bullocks and heifers. For anything of good quality, there was quite a fair demand, prices being much the same as those ruling last week. It was difficult to sell aged and inferior cows, though, and passings were frequent. Prime quality bullocks made up to £9 12/6, good quality handyweights from £7 to £7 15/-, lighter weights from £5 10/- to £6 10/-, and small and unfinished down to £4 10/-. Good quality heifers realized from £5 5/to £6 5/-, good quality lightweights from £3 15/- to £4 10/-, and small and unfinished down to £2 10/-. Fair quality heavy cows made u to £4 15/-, medium quality from £3 5/- to £4, poorer quality from £2 5/- to £2 15/-, and aged and unfinished down to £1 5/-. , The Southland Farmers Co-oper-ative Association, Ltd., sold:—On account of E. A line of 73 ewe lambs made 19/11, and another of 146 m.s. lambs 17/9. Others made over 17/-, and a number of pens brought from 13/6 to 16/-. Culled lambs brought from 8/6 to 11/-.
