GORE HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF BOARD SUPPLY OF FREE TEXT BOOKS At the monthly meeting of the Gore High School board held yesterday a letter was received from the acting Director of Education stating: “I have to inform you that the Minister of Education has decided to reinstate the provision of free text books for pupils in secondary schools, district high schools and full-time day pupils of technical high schools, whose parents or guardians are not in a position to provide books. If parents wish to take advantage of this provision they should apply to the principals of schools, who should make due inquiry into the circumstances of the parents or guardians and report to the board. If the school has a System of exchange of secondhand books, advantage should be taken of such a system to reduce the costs of the free supply, and when a pupil has no further need for a book supplied by the Government, it is to be handed back to the school. This supply refers only to text books and not to stationery.” The members pi esent were.—Messrs E. C. Smith (chairman), A. T. Newman, Henry Smith, R. L. Byars, H. McGibbon, J. Clark, Hugh Smith, F. Wallis, jun., and S. Rice. The rector’s report stated that the school resumed for the 1936 session on Tuesday, February 4. Up to date the new enrolment was 52 boys and 48 girls, a total of 100. Of last year’s pupils 150 had returned or had notified their intention of returning. He anticipated that before March 1 the roll would have increased to beyond last year’s total. Therefore the school would retain its grade and would be entitled to a teacher to fill the vacancy caused by Mr Grant’s resignation. Seven candidates were entered for the Training College Entrance examination, three obtaining a full pass. Of those who sat for the School Certificate Examination 14 passed. The secretary of the Southland Young Men’s Baptist Bible Class Union wrote applying for the use of the school for their camp which" they propose to hold during the Easter holidays. The application was granted.
