BALFOUR NOTES

PERSONAL. (From Our Correspondent.) Mr E. Ayres, Dunedin, is spending a holiday with his cousins Miss S. and Messrs J. and J. Shaw, Hazeldean. Mrs C. Grant, Oamaru, is the guest of Mr and Mrs G. Grant. Mrs J. Rabbitt, Merrivale, who has been visiting her sister Mrs G. A. McLean has returned home. Mr and Mrs Dickison, Dunedin, are the guests of Miss S. Shaw, Hazeldean/’ Mrs Mitchell and Miss Patterson, Dunedin, are the guests of Mr and Mrs R. Shuttleworth. . Mr G. R. Milward, County Engineer, Mr H. C. Gimblett, secretary, and Mr G. Wraytt, member for the district, met a deputation of local farmers in connection with the drainage of the Waimea Stream. Messrs A. McLean, C. Hailes and J. Parsons were conveners. After hearing matters discussed regarding drainage, etc., the members were thanked for their visit, the farmers expressing their approval of the scheme. Caledonian Society. A meeting of the Caledonian Society was held in the pavilion. Mr E. W. Stevens, president, presided over some 20 members. Before commencing the business Mr Stevens asked the members to stand in silence as a mark of respect for the late Mr M. Rasmussen. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of condolence to Mrs M. Rasmussen in her loss. ; Mr Stevens in speaking on the balance sheet said it showed a profit of £27 on the sports meeting held m December. He wished to thank the committee for the able way they had carried out their duties, and everyone who had helped to make the meeting the success it had been. He especially

wished to thank the ladies under the supervision of Mrs M. Rasmussen for running the refreshment booth, and congratulated the secretary Mr J Dillon for the manner in which he had carried out his duties. Mr A. P. Scobie was appointed records clerk in connection with the 50th anniversary to be held in December of this year. Arrangements for a sheep drive were made the following canvassers tor the various districts being appointed.— Messrs D. McTaggart and D. M. Alexander (Black Swamp), Mr E. W. Stevens (Glenure), Mr A. Stewart (Sandstone West), Messrs A. Rasmussen and J. McMath (township), Messrs D. Casey and E. Black (Longridge North), Mr J. Dillon, (Ardlussa), Mr J. Ginnivan (Cattle Flat), Messrs A. Orr, and V. Cross (Kingston Crossing). P.W.M.U. At the monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. Miss Martin presided over a gcod attendance of members. Before commencing the business Miss Martin asked the members to stand in silence as a mark of respect for a late member, Mrs J. Alexander. She then introduced Mrs Smith, of Winton, who gave a very interesting address on the P.W.M.U. conference held in Wellington. Miss Martin, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs Smith stating that all had enjoyed her address. The serving of afternoon tea provided by Mrs A. Stewart, brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. Social Evening. A very enjoyable social evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs M. McDonald. The rooms were beautifully decorated with flowers given by Misses M. and L. Stewart. The evening was spent in singing and dancing. Items were contributed by Mesdames Greer and Rowley. Mr J. Hood on behalf of the visitors, thanked Mr and Mrs McDonald for the evening.
