OPIUM ADDICT

INCURABLE FORM OF TUBERCULOSIS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 7. Chan Yun, a Chinese fruiterer, aged 48, one of nine arrested in an opium den last week, was brought up for sentence before Mr Wyvern Wilson this morning. A medical specialist gave evidence that the man had an incurable form of tuberculosis and was an opium addict. Because of the danger of affection, it was not advisable to send him to prison and he was not a suitable patient for a sanatorium, but for a shelter.

“In his present state he is a menace and should be segregated,” said Mr Wilson. He was remanded until December 5, pending arrangements to place him in a shelter or being shipped to China by his compatriots.
