NOT ENOUGH DETAIL.
To the Editor.
Sir, —In this morning’s issue you gave a rather lengthy criticism of Mr Savage and his colleagues and charge them with not giving sufficient detail about the Labour Party’s proposals. Now you state definitely “that the New Zealand Government does control the currency and has always done so.” There is one “detail” which you omitted to include in that statement, Sir, and that is that very important word “credit.” The Government may appear to control the amount of currency (notes, silver and coppers) but what matters most is the control of credit. Who controls that? If this wonderful Government of ours controls the issue of credit and always has, then, ye gods! it’s time they were pushed out and let somebody else have a try. May I venture to say that the financial policy of the Government is, and always has been, determined by the action of the banks.—l am, etc., CAPTAIN KETTLE. Riverton, 6/11/35.
