BLUFF BOROUGH
MONTHLY MEETING HELD THE FIRE BRIGADE (From Our Cox-respondent.) The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, his Worship the Mayor (tlxe Rev. A. E. Waite) presiding over the following: Councillors J.' H. Doyle, A. C. McKillop, O. F. Metzger, J. T. Martin, W. Butler, W. L. Johnston. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor- Budd. The Bluff Fire Brigade secretary wrote advising that Lieutenant Campbell had resigned from the brigade and that the latter wished to submit the name of Mr S. J. S. West for the vacancy. Agreed that Mr West be appointed. . Mr J. A. Silvester wrote drawing the council’s attention to a drain at the real- of his property on Ocean Beach Road and asking that same be attended to.—lt was left to the Town Clerk to have the necessary attention given the matter. Applications were received from Mr C. Beaton for permission to erect a dwelling in Henderson street for Mr John Parsons; and from Mr J. Walker to erect a dwelling for himself in Foyle street. Both applications were granted subject to the usual conditions. Advice was received that his Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Galway) and Lady Galway would arrive at Bluff on Tuesday next between 8 and 9 p.m. by the Government steamer Matai. A discussion took place regarding the form the reception would take and a programme was arranged for the occasion. The request of the local petrol bowser proprietor to have an alteration made to the road level before his premises was considered and it was finally decided to take no action in the matter.
The matter of the parking of buses in Gore street was considered at length and on the motion of Councillor- Doyle it was agreed that the Town Clerk be instructed to prepare a by-law covering the parking of buses before the Post Office and rentals for stands for same. It was agreed to leave the dog tax in the borough at last year’s figure. The question of having an honours board (containing the names of past mayors of the Bluff Borough) properly mounted and hung in the council room was considered and it was left to the Town Clerk to go into the matter of collecting the names of past mayors and to inquire regarding the cost of boards. It was stated that the first Mayor of Bluff tofik office in 1877. The fact that at present the Mayor had no distinguishing insignia of office was mentioned and after a general discussion it was unanimously decided that this matter be rectified at an early date.
The report submitted by the Town Clerk (Mi- H. A. Ferguson) showed that receipts for the month from all sources totalled £ll7O 19/11 and expenditure £1213 2/9. Tlxe report stated that the total number of registrations of dogs to date is eighty nine. Building activity from April 1, 1934, to date was as follows: New dwellings, 12 permits to the value of £8037; repairs, alterations, etc., 22 permits to the value of £495, total value, £8532. The total value of building permits issued for the financial year ended March 31, 1935, was 62, to a value of £11586. The report was approved and adopted, as were those of the electrical engineer, foreman of works, Town Hall caretaker and fire brigade superintendent.
