EMPIRE FAIR
MANY EAGER BUYERS. METHODIST CHURCH EFFORT. The Central Methodist hall in Jed street presented an animated scene vesterday afternoon when the Empire Fair, in aid of the church building fund, was opened by his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Miller. The various stalls were decorated to represent the different countries of the Empire, while the holders themselves also vvore appropriate costumes. Good business was done both in the afternoon and evening, and the organizers have every reason to be pleased with their efforts. In introducing his Worship the Rev. E. B. Chambers, minister of the church, explained the object and nature of the fair. It was hoped, he said, to raise £l5O.
Mi- Millex- referred to the handsome new church that had just been erected at the corner of Jed and Yarrow streets. The proceeds from the fair would go towards the building fund, and he was sure that those attending the fair would respond in a liberal manner. It was evident from the beautifully decorated and well-stocked stalls that the ladies of the congregation had worked very hard. His Worship concluded by congratulating the ladies upon the firstclass display they had provided. At night an excellent concert programme was presented. The different numbers were all heartily applauded, and those attending spent an enjoyable evening. The stall-holders were as follows: Tea rooms, Mesdames R. F. Greenwood, J. F. Kennedy, E. M. Hall and J. P. Jenson; sweet stall (Wales), Mesdames L. Goodson, A. M. Ayling, P. Windwood, R. Stead and Misses F. England and E. Stead; cake stall (Scotland), Mesdames D. J. Wesney, J. E. Taylor, L. Woodfield, M. J. Lambeth, W. T. Kelly, and A. C. Kelly; sewing stall (India), Mesdames E. B. Chambers, A. Noble, C. E. Rillstone, A. Fraser and H. Christie; produce stall (Canada), Mesdames P. A. Pearce, J. A. Lindsay, E. M. Stevens and T. S. Mackie; flower stall (England), Mesdames, F. V. Copp, M. E. Walker, J. Clark, E. Kelly and W. Rapley. The fair will be continued this afternoon and evening.
