A Letter From Germany

NEWS FROM MRS J. A. POTTINGER. Word has been received during the week by an Invercargill resident of Dr. and Mrs J. A. Pottinger in a letter from Mrs Pottinger written from Heidelberg, Germany, and dated September 16. Dr. and Mrs Pottinger are at present abroad and with their two daughters they spent a holiday at St. Malo on the coast of France before going to Germany. In July Dr. and Mrs Pottinger visited Orkney where the latter found fresh herrings much to her taste. She said in her letter that there the summer days were so long that artificial lighting was quite unnecessary for the sun was still shining at 10 o’clock at night. After Orkney they spent some weeks in the Cotswolds, Mrs Pottinger’s favourite part of England, and on going later to Heidelberg she was pleased to find that the surrounding country, Odenwald, was very similar to that of the Cotswolds. The flowers were the same, the hills the same height and the trees growing on them the same, chiefly beech. The chief difference lay in stone of which the hills were made the Cotswolds being limestone and the Odenwald sandstone and pink in col°UDuring her stay in London, where she had a flat, Mrs Pottinger met several Invercargill people including Miss Cran and Miss Nancy Nicholson. Soon after her arrival in England she attended Miss Frances Russell’s wedding to Mr Leslie Fulcher. During Dr and Mrs Pottinger’s absence in Germany their daughters, Patty and Lalage, and Miss Nan Swanson, had as their guest at Birdlip, Gloucester, Miss Jessie Aitken, formerly of Invercargill, and now of London.
