TAXI-DRIVER RETIRES
TRIBUTES TO MR ROSE. Drivers from the various taxi-rinks met at the residence of Mr William Rose, Kirkwood Lane, on Monday evening, in recognition of Mr Rose’s retirement after being proprietor of an Esk street taxi-stand for a lengthy period. The health of Mr Rose was enthusiastically toasted by Messrs G. Bryant (City Taxis), G. E. Fisher (Singer Taxis), R. Abernethy and D. Hillis (Red Band) and W. R. Ronald (Southland Taxis). The speakers assured Mr Rose that although the presentation was only a small one, it carried with it the good feeling and best wishes of every taxi-driver in the town. Complimentary reference was also made to the fine record which Mr Rose had as a driver over a period of 26 years, and the opinion was expressed that by his unfailing courtesy, his strict integrity and his devotion to duty he had set a standard to which every driver should aspire. The speakers also referred to the fact that over his whole experience as a driver he had not once incurred the displeasure of those in authority, and had not a black mark on his record.
In reply Mr Rose recounted some of his experiences as a taxi-driver and concluded by thanking the speakers for the gift, which came to him as a complete surprise. Mrs Rose was hostess for the function.
