WINTON NOTES

CROQUET CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Winton Croquet Club. The annual report stated: The 193435 season opened on September 19. Several inter-club matches were played during the season, resulting in some very close games. A number of friendly games added much to the enjoyment of the croquet season. One of our members, Mrs W. J. Cowie, took part in the Easter tournament at Alexandra with credit to herself and to her club. Several members journeyed to Invercargill to witness Colonel du Pre demonstrating croquet as it should be played, and a great deal of useful knowledge was gained by watching his play and listening to his remarks. With the removal of Mrs Pearce to Waikaia during the year, the club lost the services of a very capable secretary. Miss Gilmour was appointed to her place. Prior to Mrs Pearce’s departure the club tendered her a farewell afternoon on the green, at which there was a good attendance of members. At another social afternoon later in the year the club took the opportunity of saying farewell to its worthy patroness, Mrs J. R. Hamilton, who was on the eve ot her departure on holiday to Great Britain and the Continent. The club’s finances were assisted through the proceeds of the carnival organized by the Central Bowling Club and the Croquet Club matches were won by the following: Singles, (cup donated by Mr J. R. Hamilton to be held for one year, and button), Mrs W. J. Cowie; runner-up, Mrs J. Mcllwrick; doubles, (trophies donated by Miss Gilmour), Mrs R. M. Gilmour and Mrs M. Reilly.

The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: Patroness, Mrs J. R. Hamilton; president, Mrs W. Hamilton; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. H. J. Shaw and R. M._ Gilmour; secretary and treasurer, Miss K. B. Gilmour; captain, Mrs M. Reilly; deputy captain, Mrs J. Mcllwrick; committee, Mesdames W. Hamilton, J. F. Hamilton, W. Anderson, J. P. Anderssen, F. Cowie, W. J. Cowie, C. Gerrard, H. J. Davie, M. Reilly, J. Mcllwrick, W. H. J. Shaw, R. M. Gilmour, and Miss K. B. Gilmour; auditor, Mr D. Wildey; caretaker, Mr W. J. Watson.

Opening day was fixed for October 2, while it was decided to hold a coaching day for new members every Tuesday.
