BOWLS

BLUFF CLUB ANNUAL MEETING (From Our Correspondent). The annual meeting of the Bluff Bowling Club was held on Monday evening, the president, Mr L. P. Denton, occupying the chair. There was a satisfactory attendance. The chairman referred to the death of Mr H. Kingsland, stressing the latter’s connection with the club since its foundation and, his valuable services. All present stood in silence as a mark of respect. The annual report stated: “The finances of the club have been carefully attended to and though facing a fairly heavy expenditure in building a new shed last year’s balance has been well maintained. This has been made possible by the splendid work of several members, who have given a large amount of time to the preparation of the green. To Messrs Georgeson and Parry we extend our thanks for their untiring efforts during the whole year. It is a long time since there has been such keen interest in the inter-club and four-rink championships by the Bluff members, and although it involved a large amount of travelling the members thoroughly enjoyed the games. The club in the four-rink championship put up a very good performance, and were quite close to the winners. The championship singles as usual produced some very fine games and was in doubt up to the finish, when Messrs Entwistle and McGorlick tied. In the play-off Mr McGorlick won and represented the club in the champion of champions, but was defeated after several good games. The champion doubles is always the most popular with players and some very fine games were witnessed. After many close and interesting contests the winners were found in Messrs O. Johnstone and N. W. McGorlick. These players represented the club at Invercargill, but were not successful. Tile New Year tournament is becoming more popular with our members, and a fair number took advantage of the holidays to spend a splendid time in the various competitions. The Bluff teams gave a good account of themselves and Mr McGorlick was successful in winning the singles. It is with deep regret that we have to record the death of our late president, Mr H. Kingsland. He was one of the foundation members of the club and he retained his interest and membership right to the finish. We have also been unfortunate in losing three members who have been transferred to different places. We refer to Messrs A. J. Brown, J. Entwistle and J. Feeley. These were very live members and it will be hard to fill their places.”

Tlie balance sheet showed a credit balance of £lB 1/9.

The report and balance sheet were adopted. In connection with the Shield Rink competition it was agreed to leave the selection of representatives to the sole selector, Captain D. A. Smith. Competitions Approved.

Although last year’s centre competitions involved considerable travelling, members regarded them as satisfactory and the delegate was instructed to support a similar programme for the coming season. It was decided to carry out the club singles and doubles competitions in the same way as last year. The matter of bringing the honours list up-to-date was considered and it was agreed to use the handsome board presented to the club by Mr J. Feeley for the singles championship, the secretary to acquire another honours board for the doubles championship. It was also decided to send letters of appreciation, together with tokens of the club’s regard, to Messrs Brown, Entwistle and Feeley, as an acknowledgment of the valuable services given by them as members during their residence in Bluff. It was mentioned that the laides had formed a club and become affiliated with the Ladies Bowling Association and after a general discussion it was decided that the president, secretary and green rangers should decide as to what days the green would be made available to them to play. Subscriptions w'ere fixed at last year’s figures, £2 2/- for old members and £1 1/- for new, and it was left to the green rangers to decide on the date for opening the local season.

The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr A. E. Budd; vice-presidents, Messrs J. W. Lopdell and R. Preston; committee, Messrs R. Georgeson, D. F. Smith, J. Plank and W. Butler; secretary, Mr N. W. McGorlick (re-elected); treasurer, Mr C. E. Frew; auditor, Mr M. Tennet; selector, Captain D. F. Smith (re-elected); green ranger, Mr R. Georgeson; assistant, Mr C. Parry (both re-elected); delegate to centre, Mr N. W. McGorlick; match committee, Captain D. F. Smith and Messrs C. Parry and J. Perkins.
