OTAUTAU NOTES
EUCHRE. (From Our Correspondent.) There was an attendance of 20 players at the euchre tournament last week in aid of the Catholic Presbytery building fund. Mrs Sheridan won the ladies’ prize with 12 games, while Mr L. Pulley won in the men’s section with 11 games. 'I he previous week there were 34 players, Miss D. O’Brien and Mrs W. Pulley playing off for the prize, the former being successful. Messrs R. Bird and L. Thwaites also played off, the former being declared the winner. The Highland ball, under the auspices of the Otautau branch of the St. Andrew’s Scottish Society, was held in the Otautau Town Hall on Friday evening, and was a great success. There was a large attendance, visitors being I present from all parts of Southland, i The building was decorated for the occasion. The music was supplied by the Green Valley Orchestra, while Piper D. Hawthorne played for the Highland schottische. The grand march was led off by Chief D. C. McCrostie and Mrs Ireland (secretary). Mr T. Brown carried out the duties of M.C. A feature of the entertainment was the number of old-time dances which were enjoyed. Band of Hope. The monthly meeting of the Band of Hope was well attended, the chair being occupied by Mr G. A. Burnett, who gave an interesting address on “Playing the Game.” The following programme was rendered: Recitations, Miss H. Mackie, J. Thomson and P. Williams, Masters Stanley Williams, Allan, lan and Graham Sutherland; banjo solo, Miss Alison Angus; dance, Misses Alison Angus and Nancy. Maxwell; duet, Misses Estelle Mackie and Zora Sutherland. Women's Division. On Friday at the monthly meeting of the Otautau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union the president, Mrs W. Smellie, presided over a very large attendance of members and friends. An apology for absence was received from Mrs McBeath. It was reported that the annual ball had proved successful and arrangements were finalized for the birthday party on Wednesday. August 14. The roll call, “Spring Cleaning Hints,” was well responded to. Mrs Moore presented Miss Grace Beck, on the occasion of her approaching marriage, with a Pyrex casserole on a silver stand, mentioning that all were pleased she would still be a member of the local branch. On behalf of the members Mrs Moore wished her every happiness in her new sphere. The winners of the competitions were: Jar of marmalade, Mrs R. Sheddan 1. Miss J. Collie 2, Mrs R. Shcddan 3: best bloom, Mrs McMillan 1, Mrs D. Sheddan 2 and 3. Mr H. Gazzard gave a demonstration on the dressing of a fowl and also a practical talk on gardening. He emphasized that the watering of plants should take place before the planting tiiid afterwards with the hoe, not the hose. The speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Votes of thanks were also given to the hostesses. Mesdames D. and R. Sheddan, J. Black, Smellie and F. Chilton. .
