FINE REDUCED
BARMAID’S APPEAL. CONVICTION UPHELD. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch. August 9. 'Mainly on the ground that the accused’s betting business was “a trifling one,” a fine of £4O imposed by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on Helen Gunn a barmaid, for using the private bar of Tattersall’s Hotel as a common gaming house, was reduced to £2 by his Honour, Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court. Gunn brought a general appeal against thej udgment of the Magistrate but the conviction was upheld. It was stated during the hearing of the case that Thomas Ebenezer Robinson, the licensee of Tattersall’s Hotel, had also intended to make an appeal in the convictions entered against him but that this had been abandoned. The charges arose from visits made by a constable to the hotel. Bets were laid with Gunn on numerous occasions between February 2 and March 30 of this year and a raid was made by the police at the premises on March 30.
