LAND SETTLEMENT

WAIKATO SOCIETY. activitieTreviewed. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, July 22. A resume of the activities of the Waikato Land Settlement Society was made by Mr D. V. Bryant, founder and chairman of directors, in an address at the Hamilton Rotary Club to-day. A total of £10,592 had been spent in land, while horses, harness and plant involved the expenditure of £3410. The sum of £6429 had been spent in wages, portion of which was found by the Unemployment Board. The cost of buildings ran into £6127. On 6000 acres owned by the society, 32 homesteads had been erected in addition to 12 three-roomed hutments. Mr Bryant said that at a recent meeting the society’s directors proposed to consider whereby the settlement scheme could be extended. The Minister of Employment had been written to suggesting that unemployed could be tried out and trained on the society’s settlements, and if proved satisfactory, could be recommended for farm positions. The Unemployment Board would be required to pay the men’s wages while employed on the society’s settlement.
