OVERCOME BY GAS
TWO WORKMEN SUCCUMB.
LEAKAGE IN MAIN. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.50 p.m.) Newcastle, July 22. Six men working in a pit repairing underground gas mains were overcome this afternoon by escaping gas. Two are dead and the others are in hospital in a serious condition. Rescuers driven back by the gas managed to lassoo one man, who was hurried to hospital. The others were subsequently carried out by firemen wearing gas masks. Two men were engaged putting a test pipe into a high pressure main when the gas commenced to escape. Four men went to their assistance and were also overcome by the fumes. One of the latter group and one of the two men first in difficulties lost their lives.
