APPEALS FOR PEACE

SITUATION IN BELFAST. FAMILIES LEAVE DISTURBED AREAS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Belfast, July 21. Armed men forced their way into the house of John Hamil, seriously wounding him. Appeals for peace were heard in all the Protestant and Catholic churches to-day. It is estimated that the damage and loss through last week’s riots is between £40,000 and £50,000. Hundreds of families have fled from the disturbed areas, while those remaining live in a state of terror and bolt and bar themselves indoors early in the evening. The police have begun raids for arms throughout the city, and soldiers with fixed bayonets are stationed at many points behind a new type of wire barrier. FURTHER OUTRAGES MAN SHOT BY SNIPER. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.55 p.m.) Belfast, July 22. Edward Scarlett was shot dead during a renewal of fighting in Newtonards road. Apparently he was the victim of a sniper concealed in a gateway. Several buildings were set on fire at Clones, on the Free State border. The house of William Meighan, a member of the British Legion, was attacked and windows were smashed. At Limerick a crowd in the course of an anti-Protestant demonstration stoned six shops and two clergymen’s houses and smashed the windows of a church, the Masonic hall and the Young Men’s Christian Association’s building before the police dispersed them. Catholic priests condemned the outrage.
